Krakow
August 2022
It was a full days ride from where we disembaked at Budapest to Krakow.
The scenery was beautiful and we had a nice lunch at a ski lodge.
Krakow is on the Vistula River.
We stayed at the Hotel Sheraton, which was a healthy walk to
the town square but as close as we could get.
The town square, Rynek Glówny, dates back to the 13th century
and is the largest medieval square in Europe.
These pierogies are a serving for one.
Neither of us finished it.
Kielbasa and Kraut from a street vender in the sqaure was scrumptious.
Our guide told us to use cash (Zloty) for meals and small
purchases but even he street vendors took plastic.
We toured the Wawel Cathedral complex,
which was very close to the hotel.
The Oskar Schindler's Enamel Factory Museum (Oskar Schindler's Deutsche Emailwarenfabrik)
was one of the highlights of our visit to Krakow.
It is similar to the Holocaust Museum in Washington DC.
One of our tours was to the Jewish Ghetto of Krakow.
The Memorial of the Empty Chairs in Hero's Square has 70 chairs,
reminiscent of the furniiture dicarded by 7000 Jews who were deported to Auschitz.
A Jewish Cemetery
Our farewell tour and dinner were at the Wieliczka Salt Mines.
We descended 300 steps to the first level and were amazed at the
displays and chapels carved into the salt by the miners since the 13th century.
Mining ceased here in 1996.
After decending further to a lower level we arrived at St. Kinga's Chapel
with its many chapels and reliefs.
Our farewell dinner was in a stunning cavern deep in the salt mine.
